The opening of the Faculty Art Show took place on Thursday September 21st, 2006. Several professors and contributors were at the opening, which was held in the Thoreau Art Gallery, located in Peterson Hall.
An array of work was displayed including glass, paintings, sculptures, photography, and an intaglio print. Many can see why the Art department is proud to have the professors that it does due to the eye-catching work displayed at the show. Works by Leandre Poisson, Sarah Hamilton-Parker, Susan Silverman, and Joanna Korsen can be viewed in a quaint room overlooking Pearly Pond.
Professor Lorettann Gascard is the head of the gallery and was at the opening of the Faculty Art show. The Faculty Lounge is only a temporary location for the gallery until another location becomes established. Professor Gascard commented, "We have adapted very well to our new space and I have a wonderful staff backing me up." She went on to say that she "was satisfied with the exhibition and the opening of the show. People should come and see the artwork. There are some great pieces." The gallery hosts several shows throughout the year and the current art will be on display until October 17th, 2006. The next show, entitled "Sabbatical Exhibition" featuring works by Professor Lee Dunholder, opens October 25th and runs through November 15th, 2006.
Freshman Dana Ricciardi, a gallery attendant, commented on the current exhibit and said, "Working in the gallery is an interesting experience because it allows me to be around art more. It also lets me see what it is actually like to work in an art gallery." She added, "The faculty members had interesting pieces in the show." Dana is also a student of Professor Gascard in her Art and Drawing I classes.
The Thoreau Gallery is just one of the many assets here at Franklin Pierce which showcases the talent and prestige of the faculty and staff. The Thoreau Gallery is open to all students and the current show, along with others being featured this year, and is worth the time to view. Art enriches life, and seeing some of the pieces on display may just inspire fellow artists to create something of their own.
