On Saturday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse Pierce Activities Council (PAC) hosted America’s Next Great Star, a new twist on the annual talent show.
The show had an “American Idol” feel to attracting many students to the event. The day before there were five-minute auditions with a panel of judges, so at the event attendees were able to see the performers’ audition tapes, bloopers and outtakes, as well as their actual performance at the show.
Derek Scalia, assistant director of Student Involvement, said PAC wanted to revamp the talent show after the record low attendance for the show last year. There was also a $500 cash incentive for the winner this year.
“We are trying to connect with students as best as possible this year. We are enhancing the experience through technology and prizes,” said Scalia.
PAC did something right because there was a great turnout for the event. Admission was free and many students were excited to cheer on their friends.
The winner of America’s Next Great Star, as well as $500, sophomore Anthony Marovelli, said he really enjoyed playing in for his friends on stage and then winning cash for his performance.
“Just playing on stage is a great feeling,” said Marovelli. “Having a bunch of people cheering in the stands is worth more than the money.”
This year students were able to text their vote for their favorite performer or performing group. Since the students were able to get votes through text message, many of the performers enlisted the help of their friends.
Caitlin Smith, travel chair for PAC said that students on campus had a great opportunity to display their sometimes hidden talents at this event.
“America’s Next Great Star was an awesome opportunity for students to showcase their talent in a low pressure atmosphere. We are really happy we were able to put on this event,” said Smith.
Scalia believes the show was a great opportunity for students to gain experience, showcase their talent, and potentially win money.
