Cash Conundrums

Here’s a thing that I’ve noticed about college students, Franklin Pierce included. We all seem to be split down the middle when it comes to funds. Now I’m not talking the big money such as tuition fees or room and board, I’m talking about regular everyday spending whether it be going out to dinner or buying a movie. I feel like students are literally split in half with the people who spend almost no money whatsoever and the people that spend all of their funds within a week’s time.

Now I will confess that I am one of the latter. I am horrible with money; the second it comes in, it goes right back out. I have no back-bone when it comes to shopping, especially with CDs. The second I see something that I want, I immediately revert back to my childhood where I would throw tantrums because I couldn’t get what I wanted. Then I realize that I can actually buy it for myself, so I do. I have no self control, and I admit it. I also am well aware that not a lot of you out there do either! Let’s be honest. I see people pulling in with their big shopping bags, trying to sneak them into the dorm.

The best part about people like me who spend all their money is that they are always the first people to say they don’t have any. Going to Keene and need gas money? Too bad, they’ve got nothing. Poverty manages to strike them at the exact moment where they would owe another human being money instead of a department store.

One thing that I will pat myself on the back for is that, while I spend a lot of money, it’s usually on small things like CDs and movies. I will never in my life understand how a young man or woman could ever spend over $100 dollars on a pair of shoes or a hand bag. I see people, even my own friends, buying these ridiculously expensive items. For what one of you young ladies might spend on a hand bag I could get about seven CDs. I like spending money, but the second it hits triple digits I’m out.

Of course there are also the people on the other side of the coin who will never spend a dime. I see their point, I really do, and it makes a lot of sense. I wish I could be more like them. However, I feel that every now and then you gotta loosen those wallets, people. Not necessarily to go shopping, but if your friends are going on a day trip don’t miss out! It’s college, we gotta have some fun while we’re here! Just make sure that you don’t get to the point I’m at, which is borderline shopper’s rehab. I feel like people can sometimes become frugal to the point where they’re missing out. Don’t miss out; college is for living it up!

I see this all over Franklin Pierce: the spenders and the savers. I try to be in the middle but have yet to succeed. I hope one day to have a success story for all of you where I walk into a store and don’t say, “Oh! Doesn’t that CD look lovely? What a bargain!” It’s a tough goal but I think I can do it. Some of you, however, need to find that goal with me because you are definitely not all innocent out there! Come on Franklin Pierce, let’s hit a happy medium with our spending habits! It’s a new day, Franklin Pierce: the dawn of the dollar!
