As the year draws to a close and so does my half way point in college, I thought it was time I wrote what I’ve learned at Franklin Pierce thus far. Professors remind us almost every day that we should be absorbing what they have been saying and, while I mean no disrespect, there are just as important things that I’ve learned outside of the classroom. So here is the list of the top five things I’ve learned while getting my learning on (in no particular order).
Number 1: If it is soup bowl or buffalo chicken day be prepared to wait in line for food for at least 15 minutes, even if you are not interested in either. The line will be out the door for these two food numbers and they go like hotcakes. And if you are the one to take the last batch of buffalo chicken be prepared for the nasty looks coming your way and/or a fight.
Number 2: The Internet is slow, the power is not reliable, and fire alarms happen (a lot). Okay so I bundled these three together, but they had to be mentioned! There is even a Facebook group describing just how slow the Internet is here, making for trying to download music or YouTube videos nearly impossible. The power goes out at least once a semester and it tends to take a while for it to come back on. And yes, the fire alarms. It always seems like there is one person in their towel running out (that is my worst fear) and chances are it was because someone forgot to put more water in their macaroni and cheese.
Number 3: Never bring home your winter clothes. Today (Tuesday April 28) is all the proof you need for this one. It snowed at the end of April! I brought home all but one long-sleeved shirt and was left to brave the bone-chilling wind and snow in a t-shirt and zip-up. Just the other day people were in shorts and dresses and then it’s back to jackets. I guess I’ll just have to live and learn this one.
Number 4: The geese will always come back. I think it is safe to say that about 99.9% of this campus hates those disgusting birds. I’ve seen students run after them, throw sticks at them, or swerve their cars close to them, but try as we might they just come back for another round. Some people say that their babies are just “oh so cute” in June, but I think these people are forgetting one huge detail. Those cute geese turn into the huge ones that leave their mess EVERYWHERE.
Number 5: Tomorrow is another day. I know that it sounds cheesy, but when being so close to friends heated arguments can happen, boyfriends or girlfriends break up with you, you get an F on an exam, or had to do the walk of shame in the middle of the day. Whether it is any or all of these, I’ve learned that tomorrow is another day and you can’t let a bad day get the best of you. Wasn’t it DMB who sang, “No matter how dark the night, somehow the sun rises once again and all shadows are chased away?”
So there it is my list of what I’ve learned. I know there are more I am forgetting or that deserved to be on the list, but these are the things I’ve grabbed onto in the past two years. After reading this over I can’t help but smile because only Frankie P could deliver these to me.
