Six students, one recent graduate, and two faculty members attended the National Council for Education for the Ceramic Arts, held at the Philadelphia Convention Center in the Center City during the first week of April.

According to fine arts professor Susan Silverman, the students attended lectures, panel discussions, and demonstrations, as well as exhibitions of ceramics in museums, galleries, and schools in the area. “There were vendors of tools, books, and equipment, and representatives of universities with graduate programs, artist in residency programs, and art centers from all over the country,” she said.

Junior Victoria Earle, an art education major who went to the conference, had nothing but positive remarks about the experience. “The NCECA conference was eye-opening and rewarding,” she said. “I learned a lot about techniques for making pottery along with valuable information from the topical discussions about post-graduate programs. At the demonstrations there were live potters working in front of us and we saw every stage of their process, which was incredible.”

The students and faculty who attended received support through the Dean’s office and fund raising efforts by faculty and students through pottery sales that took place during the year.

Silverman has attended the conference for the last four years, each of which was in a different city across the country. Last year, Silverman and five students went to the conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Next year it will be held in Tampa, Florida.

Silverman gave a presentation on Tuesday, April 20 to students and faculty as part of the Celebration of Liberal Arts at the Franklin Pierce library.
